The insurance company polled 524 drivers who were asked to identify 12 common road signs which included "no stopping", "road works" and "uneven roads". Some 77% were unable to identify correctly more than six of the signs. None of the drivers surveyed could identify all 12 signs correctly.



The Volkswagen Passat...

The Volkswagen Passat will take part in the Urban Challenge, a 60-mile contest for driverless vehicles which involves them merging with traffic, negotiating roundabouts, avoiding other motorists and abiding by road laws. Computers control the steering, throttle and brakes, and scientists are now adding lasers, GPS sat-nav and video cameras so the car can ‘see’ the road. Two years ago, VW entered a Touareg SUV in a similar contest in the desert, but the Passat will have a tougher job.

Direct Line will meet the cost of any repairs if its policyholders are in an accident with an uninsured motorist - and it won"t affect the customer"s no-claims discount. The news comes as random checks by Humberside police revealed one-in-five drivers stopped had no cover.
