The mag"s pictures give the best clue yet of what buyers have got to look forward to. Pictured in three and five-door form, the cornerstone of the French company"s new small car offensive will take styling cues from the 307 hatchback, as well as the forthcoming 1007 city model. The trademark headlights and grille from the larger 407 will also feature. Longer and wider than the current 206, the 207 will offer a more spacious cabin.

With a deep front splitter, low side skirts and high rear wing, it"s more aggressive looking than ever - and the style is backed up by the dynamics. Using the same 3.6-litre flat six-cylinder unit as the outgoing model, engineers have increased airflow through the engine and upped power from 381bhp to 415bhp at 7,600rpm.

Rank-and-file police have launched a scathing attack on speed cameras, calling them money-making machines and blaming them for turning the public against the law. Police Federation chairman Jan Berry said: "I believe some cameras are there as a revenue generator, and the police get the blame for that." She called for a national audit of speed cameras to be carried out.

Bosses say owners of the outgoing car rated its styling so much that the firm has opted for an evolution?ary look on the second generation, which hits dealers on 1 September.

Based on the Qashqai platform, it’s 175mm longer than its predecessor, giving more room for passengers and luggage. The boot has grown by 193 litres to 603 litres, and now has a double deck floor.

Under the bonnet, buyers get a choice of petrol engines: a 139bhp 2.0-litre and a 166bhp 2.5. For the more economically minded, Nissan’s latest 2.0-litre dCi diesel is available with 148bhp or 170bhp, returning 39.8mpg and 38.2mpg respectively.

All cars get a six-speed manual gearbox as standard. A conventional six-ratio automatic is an option on the lower-powered diesel, while the larger-capacity petrol version can be specified with a CVT unit.

The new car comes in three trim levels: Trek, Sport and Aventura. All have electronically controlled 4WD, Bluetooth phone connect?ivity, alloys, climate control and ESP stability control. Prices range from ?18,795 for the 2.0-litre petrol Trek to ?26,720 for the 2.0 dCi Aventura auto.
