Here"s one sales chart that doesn"t have a Ford Focus at the top. According to a survey of instructors, the Vauxhall Corsa is the most popular driving school car. The Luton firm leads the way with 27 per cent of the market, followed by Ford (18 per cent) and Nissan (12 per cent). If you exclude the big chains such as BSM and the AA, the Nissan Micra comes out as the top petrol model and Renault"s Clio is the favourite diesel.

A first-corner clash in the sprint event damaged his car, so he could only finish sixth. In the feature race he came 12th after being tagged from behind by the German entry and later suffering a penalty for speeding in the pitlane. “Olly drove well, but these things happen,” said Team GBR boss Katie Clements. Swiss driver Neel Jani won both races and now leads the championship.

Budget brand Proton is boosting its Gen2 range with a special edition. The LE is based on the GLS version of the family hatch and features air-con, alloys and remote central locking. The 1.3-litre model costs ÷£7,995, while the 1.6-litre is ÷£8,595 – both ÷£1,000 less than the GLS. Meanwhile, the Savvy supermini (pictured) has a sharper look, as a rear spoiler now comes as standard.
