Spied this week at a dealer launch in France, Renault"s next-generation Clio is out to give the number one-selling Corsa a tough fight - and it"s laying its hopes on a bold new face. With huge headlights and a smaller grille, the new three-door Clio is a stronger design than the current car. That visual strength is continued at the rear, with a chunky C-pillar and elliptical tail-lights. The whole effect is much sportier than the five-door, which will look more like a baby Scenic.

But we"ve learned that...

But we"ve learned that a showroom model is definitely on the way. A Peu-geot insider said: "The car has had a great reception. People love its combination of practicality and hot hatch ap-peal. Signing it off for production looks to be a mere formality."

Expected to wear the legendary GTi name when it hits dealerships in mid-2005, the newcomer will be powered by a 140bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged eng-ine. The leather seats will have interchangeable inserts, much like on the show car, with a choice of three trim colours based on the paint scheme. Also unveiled was the firm"s facelifted 607 range, which gets new bumpers and revised headlamps, plus mild interior changes. The fresh line-up goes on sale in Britain this winter, but buyers will miss out on the new flagship. The 2.7-litre V6 diesel will be offered in left-hand drive only, as costs to turn it into a right-hand drive car are too high.
