The front end will be slightly toned down and the unusual sliding rear doors are set to disappear, but the Omega will definitely retain the bold profile and unusual rear end of the striking prototype. The car will debut at the 2007 Frankfurt show and Vauxhall hopes to have it in dealers by the end of that year.

By mixing trademark Volvo styling cues, including the wide shoulder line and jutting front grille, with a more sporty profile, company bosses hope the forthcoming S80 will appeal to more executive buyers than ever.

It should have the chassis to match those stunning looks, too. Engineers are confident the newcomer will be as rewarding to drive as its class rivals, while a new AWD model - and the prospect of a 315bhp 4.4-litre V8 powerplant - will further emphasise the S80"s sporting intentions.

At the same time, Volvo is keen not to alienate existing customers, so expect a soothing ride and luxurious cabin. Set to go on sale in a year"s time, the car will start from around í‚á£24,000.
