Car cloning is being blamed for the rise in stolen vehicles which are never recovered by police. While thefts have fallen, the percentage of cars that vanish has grown. Seven years ago, police recovered 70 per cent of stolen motors, against 50 per cent last year. ”Some are exported, but a majority are given new identities and resold in the UK,” said Roger Powell, of vehicle history specialist mycarcheck.com.
THE NEW Highway Code has been delayed after thousands of cyclists objected to wording suggesting they should always use cycle paths where they exist. According to cycling campaigner CTC, the new Code, due in September, will make it clear that cyclists have every right to be on the road, and that cycle lanes and facilities are “not compulsory”.
Volkswagen has revealed prices for the new Golf Estate, ahead of its August launch in the UK. The range starts at ÷£14,347 for the S 1.6-litre and rises to ÷£20,417 for the top 2.0 TDI. Three trims are available – S, SE and Sportline – along with three engines – a 1.6-litre 99bhp petrol, and 1.9-litre 102bhp and 2.0-litre 136bhp TDIs.
