The system, invented...
The system, invented by scientists at Cambridge University, is better than sat-nav in urban areas. That"s because it doesn"t need a clear view of the skies to see the GPS satellites that orbit the Earth. Likewise, it can also work in tunnels and under bridges, one of current sat-nav"s biggest failings. But scientists admit they"ve yet to crack the problem of getting good snaps of the surroundings when there"s thick fog. Ironically that"s when motorists need most help.
Emphasising the ST"s...
Emphasising the ST"s sporty style are the optional bold stripes, designed to evoke memories of the original GT40. With the Mondeo"s 150bhp 2.0-litre Duratec engine and a five-speed gearbox, the Fiesta covers 0-60mph in a mere 7.9 seconds and goes on to 129mph.
Its performance credentials are further enhanced by some aggressive design, such as a wider and deeper grille, side skirts and a rear spoiler. Inside, metal pedals, a leather steering wheel and two-tone front seats with unique logos complete the look. The price is expected to be around í‚á£13,000.
Meanwhile, the Zetec S will have two engine options - a 100bhp 1.6-litre and, for the first time, a performance diesel in the shape of a 90bhp 1.6 TDCi. While not offering anything like the ST"s pace, the petrol Zetec S covers 0-60mph in a respectable 9.9 seconds and has a 114mph top speed, with the diesel offering 11.2 seconds and 112mph. Expect to pay around í‚á£11,500 for either model.
