Learner drivers are being forced out of town, in a move that could mark the end of test-taking on familiar roads.

Tests carried out by the Transport Research Laboratory in Berkshire found that consuming one bottle of Lucozade Extra, which contains 60mg of glucose and 40mg of caffeine, can be enough to quicken reactions. The trials were sponsored by the drinks maker. On average, the improvement was a tenth of a second, or three metres at 70mph. Lane-keeping also improved, and drivers kept their distance when following vehicles.

Fiat"s going to roll...

Fiat"s going to roll back the years ò€“ literally. The firm will pull the wraps off a new soft-top Fiat 500 at the Geneva Motor Show in March. And in keeping with the city carò€™s retro design, it will have a similar roof mechanism to the original 500ò€™s.

The newcomer will use a full-length fabric roof that slides back to store on top of the parcel shelf. It will retain a glass rear window, plus full-frame doors and the hatchò€™s roofline. The Swiss show will also see the debut of the 500 Abarth SS hot hatch. This has a 1.4-litre turbo engine which delivers 155bhp. Expect these new versions of the 500 to arrive in dealerships by the end of the year.
