As Ford pulled the wraps from the new Shelby GT500KR, it also revealed its intention to bend the rules of the family car market with the new Flex crossover.
Having racked up nine...
Having racked up nine constructors’ titles and 113 grand prix victories, the Oxfordshire outfit is still considered one of the sport’s big names – but its stock is falling fast. Williams hasn’t won a race since 2004, and only scored 11 points in 2006 when relying on stopgap Cosworth V8 engines.
“Without question, 2006 was not our finest year,” admitted team
chief Sir Frank Williams. “I’m delighted, however, to see how the entire workforce has redoubled its efforts over the winter. It’s how you perform in adversity that really counts.” One man who didn’t choose to stay and fight was lead driver Mark Webber, who has joined David Coulthard at Red Bull Racing (see Page 94). In his place, Williams has promoted test driver Alex Wurz to partner Nico Rosberg.
The Austrian has only competed once since 2000, finishing third in San Marino two years ago when subbing for Juan Pablo Montoya at McLaren. Understandably, he is delighted with the opportunity. “I can’t wait for the start of the season,” he said. “Although I have covered thousands of test miles, I simply haven’t had enough racing.”
Team-mate Rosberg is looking forward to building on 2006. “My experience from last year will help significantly. A lot of effort has gone into the new car and I think we can expect a much improved season,” he predicted.
