Home hopes Andy Priaulx and James Thompson lead the way as the FIA World Touring Car Championship reached the halfway stage with two accident-strewn events in Curtiba, Brazil.
As front-runners in the series, both Brits arrived in South America with their cars carrying large amounts of success ballast. But they still managed to finish both chaotic races in the top eight to bring home some decent points.
Thompson took fifth and fourth place in his SEAT Leon to secure second in the champ÷ionship, while Priaulx came home in eighth in the opening encounter to claim pole for race two, which sees the top eight finishers line up in reverse order.
He then converted first on the grid into his fourth win of the year to establish a three-point advantage over Thompson. The race was stopped early on the final lap after Alain Menu shunted his Chevrolet. The Swiss star was unhurt.
“It’s brilliant to have another win, but the points are more important,” said Priaulx. “Leaving Brazil with 11 points despite 65 kilos of handicap weight was more than I expected. Therefore I’m pleased that I managed to take full advantage of the reverse grid.”
