In a bid to help the Government meet EU targets for the use of biofuels, the Commission has 160 vehicles already using biodiesel and one running entirely on 100 per cent used cooking oil that hasn"t even been refined into biodiesel.

The trials have had pleasing results and it seems that concerns over vegetable oil clogging up engines may be unfounded.

"So far, so good," said Richard Earl, sustainability development officer for the Commission, "All our biodiesel-powered vehicles are running well, with no sign of it doing any harm to our engines, and we"re delighted to be making this contribution to the "greening government" programme."
