Inspired by the Simba concept from last year"s Geneva Motor Show, the 4x4"s raised suspension is clearly visible. A range of diesel and petrol engines is likely, with the base car getting a 1.2 petrol unit.

Flagship variants are set to offer the new 1.4 petrol and 1.3-litre Multijet oil-burning units. A manual, AWD transmission will aid off-road ability.

The newcomer is likely to take on Volkswagen"s Polo Dune and the Rover Streetwise. And while prices have yet to be confirmed, the Panda 4x4 is tipped to cost at least í‚á£12,000 - which would make it one of the most expensive models in the range.
