Ford is building a gadget that understands human speech so that drivers can ask their sat-nav: "How do I get to Buckingham Palace?" and receive turn-by-turn directions en route. The device, being perfected at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US, will also allow a driver to tell the radio to tune in to a favourite station.

Intelligent Parking...

Intelligent Parking Assist (IPA) is now stan÷­dard on the flagship Toyota Prius T Spirit.

The set-up automatically controls the steering as the car backs into a tight spot. Drivers only have to judge the throttle and brake. The feature is due to be included on the ÷£20,680 hybrid from 1 January.
