A combination of jet...

A combination of jet lag, tradition and technology means that I’m writing this column at an absurdly unsociable hour from my temporary office-cum-studio on one of the best-known driving streets in the most notorious car city on the planet. I’m jet lagged because I’ve just travelled from China, which is eight hours ahead of the UK, to Los Angeles which is eight hours behind. So it’s little wonder that my body clock is more troubled than a Ford corporate accountant and I’m wide awake at 3.30am, penning these words on the eve of the LA Auto Show.

Prepare for price hikes! Ford has announced an average rise of four per cent from today, and rivals are following suit. One industry expert has even warned motorists could face increases of up to 10 per cent by the end of the year.

It’ll be three...

It’ll be three for the price of one on Kia’s Geneva show stand this year! The Korean company will be revealing a trio of concepts based on its forthcoming Soul compact MPV.

To mark the event, company bosses have released this teaser image of the ‘Burner’ version. Described as the ‘bad boy’ of the three, it features satin black paint, dragon graphics on the bodywork and chunky alloy wheels.

Each of the different designs will demonstrate the newcomer’s potential for personalisation. In an effort to appeal to younger buyers, Kia will offer a large range of customisation kits. Expect the remaining two concepts to boast wild body styling additions and bold graphics packages.

When the showroom-ready model goes on sale in 2009 it’ll boast people-carrier practicality with rugged SUV styling. External highlights will be the large wraparound windscreen, distinctive sloping roofline and neat rear-hinged back doors.

Underneath the eye-catching bodywork will be a range of engines familiar to existing Kia owners. Inlcuded in the line-up will be the torquey and refined 1.6 and 2.0-litre CRDi oil-burners alongside similarly sized petrol units. However, don’t be fooled by the off-roader ride height: the Soul will be strictly two-wheel drive
