Having racked up nine constructors’ titles and 113 grand prix victories, the Oxfordshire outfit is still considered one of the sport’s big names – but its stock is falling fast. Williams hasn’t won a race since 2004, and only scored 11 points in 2006 when relying on stopgap Cosworth V8 engines.

The muscular V8-engined drop-top is codenamed Marilyn - a play on the coup탩"s native Australian nickname of Munro. It has become a legend in its own right, though, as rumours of the cabrio"s existence have circulated for months around the industry. It’s all thanks...

It’s all thanks to a new service which allows customers to browse motors that have had the motoring organisation’s seal of approval.

Dealers can post ads for RAC-inspected vehicles directly on to the company’s Internet site. Each car is subject to a written report, which includes a variety of physical checks to verify its mechanical condition.

A spokesman for the RAC said: “All the confidence that customers receive from the programme on the forecourt is now available online. With this additional service, car buyers can search dealers’ listed vehicles at any time, from anywhere.” The firm’s website at www.racinspectedcars.co.uk already lists thousands of models for motorists to browse, and all the vehicles shown are given confidence-boosting HPI history and mileage checks before being listed.

Meanwhile, another security measure is on the up – as window-etching specialist Retainagroup is urging motorists to have their cars marked. According to the latest figures released by the company, vehicles with visible tags are 50 per cent less likely to be stolen than those without. And the system isn’t only a deterrent to criminals.

Motorists looking to buy a car fitted with easy-to-see window or body markings can telephone the International Security Register (ISR). While it doesn’t provide the same level of protection as a full vehicle history check, a call to the ISR hotline could reveal if the vendor isn’t listed as the owner, or if the car has been reported as stolen.
