In 1997, the message from the newly elected Government, which had Gordon Brown as its high-profile and extremely powerful Chancellor, was: “Things can only get better.” Fast forward 10 years, and the non-driving Mr Brown is, without the permission of a single voter, doing Prime Minister impersonations and even assuming the lofty job title, too. Japanese giant Toyota...

Japanese giant Toyota is working on a new single-seater ò€“ but this one isnò€™t bound for Formula One!

The maker is joining forces with electronics company Sony to produce a ò€˜personal mobility deviceò€™. Itò€™s basically a hi-tech armchair on wheels, and uses the latest innovations from both firms.

Taking lessons learned from the 2005 i-swing concept, the tiny runaround aims to make light work of congested streets. Two electric motors power each rear wheel, giving impressive manoeuvrability, while special robotic kit automatically steers it clear of obstacles. No production date has been revealed, but sources say itò€™s at least two years away.
