Less than a third of motorways and trunk roads are lit at night, says the Highways Agency.

That"s despite it acknowledging the contribution lighting makes to driver safety. Its website lists recent M42 improvements as including "full motorway lighting providing a safer driving environment". A spokeswoman for the agency admitted: "The standards for providing lighting on our network are currently under review."
