Merging styling cues...
Merging styling cues from the Modus supermini-MPV and the next-generation Clio, the newcomer will combine style with practicality to give city car buyers yet another innovative compact Renault to choose from.
As this picture shows, the Twingo"s look is dominated by large headlights, inspired by those of the existing model, which has been a consistent top-seller across the Channel since its launch in 1993. Available only as a three-door, the hatchback will go on sale alongside the Clio, but will be marketed as a stylish, upmarket machine - like the MINI and Smart ForTwo - rather than a budget city runabout. Expect prices to be slightly higher than rivals. The Twingo is tipped to have a more adventurous and youthful cabin than the new Clio, due on sale next year. Its four-seat layout is likely to be luxuriously equipped, and trimmed with better-quality materials than other small Renaults.
To keep development costs down, engineers have based the new Twingo on the same chassis as the current Clio, rather than the B-platform which now underpins the Modus. As a result, the engine range will be made up of petrol and diesel powerplants from Renault"s existing line-up.
Despite already being in the advanced stages of development, the Twingo won"t be unveiled until late 2006. Sales are expected to start the following year.
