But a serious heart condition, diagnosed when he was 36, forced Shelby to give up racing - and he got involved in car development. In 1961, he mailed a proposal to AC Cars of Thames Ditton, Surrey, suggesting it fit a small-block Ford V8 into the Ace - and four years later, the Shelby Cobra 427 was born. Outdated accident recovery...

Outdated accident recovery procedures are causing unnecessary jams on motorways, claims the Road Haulage Association (RHA). A number of salvage firms across the country have specialist heavy-lifting gear to clear crashed lorries fast. But under current rules, police have to call recovery companies to incidents on a rota basis, whether they have this equipment or not. An RHA spokesman explained: "The best tools for the job aren"t always used, so motorists suffer."
