I wasn"t surprised to...

I wasn"t surprised to see Jaguar"s ill-fated XJ220 listed in a new book called Naff Motors. Perhaps it"s my age, but I"ve really fallen out of love with high-performance supercars. We"re suffering a bit of a glut of the things at present. Apart from the endless derivatives of the Pagani Zonda, Koenigsegg and Mercedes McLaren SLR, we"re also supposed to drop our jaws at Lexus"s supersaloon and Honda"s NSX replacement soon, while Alfa has recently announced it will make the 8C. At the Paris Motor Show this month, there will be another totally unrealistic Peugeot supercar concept that will never be made, as well as Audi"s de-tuned and rebodied Lamborghini Gallardo, the R8. Sorry, but the only jaw dropping I"ll be doing is a great big yawn.

Choosing a green car...

Choosing a green car isn’t easy – especially if you live in the North! A Government-backed survey reveals garages in Yorkshire and Humberside are least likely to highlight how polluting a model is. Research by the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership found only 40 per cent of these counties’ dealers display Department for Transport stickers listing mpg and emissions bands (right) on forecourt models. In top-performing Wales, it was nearly 80 per cent.

Renault has revived...

Renault has revived the chunky look of its original four-wheel-drive MPV, axed in 2004, with a new Conquest version of the latest car - and it"s on sale now.

Buyers get a choice of a ÷£19,135 1.9-litre dCi 130 diesel, returning 47.1mpg, and a ÷£17,945 2.0-litre VVT 136 petrol with 35.3mpg. Two more models will boost the range when they arrive in September.

The Conquest has stiffer suspension than the standard car and rides 20mm higher. It also boasts chunky rubbing strips, plus there are door sill guards and roof bars.

The interior is based on the five-seater Dynamique, but the Conquest gets unique orange flashes on the centre console, uphol÷stery and gear÷lever gaiter. As with other mod÷els in the range, the rear seats can slide forwards and back, fold or be taken out completely. Options include a Cycle Pack, which comprises roof crossbars and a bike carrier.
