As well as sprinting from 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds and hitting a 155mph top speed, it"s going to be a treat for occupants" ears - with the electric roof folded away, the sound of the direct-injection V8 at its 8,000rpm maximum should mean an even more vivid experience.

Set to rival the BMW X5 and Mercedes M-Class, the model has bold styling and an innovative seating arrangement. The Q7"s imposing nose is dominated by Audi"s trademark grille, outlined in chrome, and gets narrow, angled headlamps.

Inside, the SUV - which is based on the Pikes Peak concept from the 2003 Detroit Motor Show - has seating for six, arranged in three rows of two, with a rear bench that folds into the boot floor.

Engines, sourced from the A6 range, will include the new 3.0-litre TDI V6. The Range Rover Sport-rivalling flagship gets a high-performance FSI petrol unit.

Fitted with air-suspension, the Q7 will be capable in the rough, but its quattro 4WD also offers agile on-road handling. Meanwhile, Audi has confirmed a new A6 Allroad will go on sale in mid-2006.
