The Volkswagen Passat will take part in the Urban Challenge, a 60-mile contest for driverless vehicles which involves them merging with traffic, negotiating roundabouts, avoiding other motorists and abiding by road laws. Computers control the steering, throttle and brakes, and scientists are now adding lasers, GPS sat-nav and video cameras so the car can ‘see’ the road. Two years ago, VW entered a Touareg SUV in a similar contest in the desert, but the Passat will have a tougher job.

At 7,400 square metres - the size of a football pitch - the show stand will be the largest that the company has ever created in Europe.

NUISANCE calls from canvassers when selling your car could be a thing of the past, thanks to Auto Trader. TeleSafe is a free initiative that should put an end to annoying calls from companies claiming to be able to sell your vehicle for a fee!

From the start of February, online and magazine advertisers using Auto Trader will be able to have calls to their phone filtered, with those from blacklisted canvassers blocked and real buyers connected. The system uses a dummy number in the ad, which routes calls through the firm’s database.
