Tests carried out by the Transport Research Laboratory in Berkshire found that consuming one bottle of Lucozade Extra, which contains 60mg of glucose and 40mg of caffeine, can be enough to quicken reactions. The trials were sponsored by the drinks maker. On average, the improvement was a tenth of a second, or three metres at 70mph. Lane-keeping also improved, and drivers kept their distance when following vehicles.

Scientists thought a larger dose of caffeine was needed to boost alertness. Our survey in Issue 837 discovered that drivers would have to consume up to 11 pints to get enough.
