The outgoing model found...

The outgoing model found favour with private buyers who liked the feeling of quality at a competitive price - and VW is looking to build on that success. Engineers are concentrating on fit and finish, aiming to close the gap with the luxury executive Phaeton while also fending off op-position from both Mercedes and BMW in the premium estate sector.

As the mag"s exclusive pictures show, the car is reminiscent of the present model, although it wears the family face first seen on the Concept C coup탩-cabriolet unveiled at this year"s Geneva Motor Show. The deep grille surround also gives it a visual link with the Phaeton, while the sloping nose and smooth rear create a more dynamic look than that of the current Passat.

The estate will be just as roomy as the existing version, with huge luggage capacity and plenty of space for passengers. There is also the possibility of a third row of seats, although that"s not been confirmed yet. Under the bonnet, there will be a wider range of engines to choose from. The excellent new FSI petrol units will come in 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre turbo guises, alongside several versions of the 2.0-litre TDI diesel.

As an entry-level oil-burning option, the proven 1.9-litre TDI powerplant is expected to remain. Customers are also likely to be offered a 3.2-litre V6 petrol, to compete with flagship load-luggers from rival firms. Both the estate and saloon will be launched next year.
