These are the first official pictures of the three-door BMW 1-Series, which joins a revised five-door in dealers in March. To go with its fresh look, the line-up has a host of features designed to boost fuel economy.

Five-doors gain the larger double-kidney grille, reprofiled bumpers and tweaked headlight clusters of the new sporty variant. However, three-door buyers will also be able to choose between a four and five-seat configuration.

Additions include the firm"s Brake Energy Regeneration, which uses an alternator to reduce the load on the engine. Stop-Start technology and low-rolling-resistance tyres join weight-saving measures to ensure the 118d can hit 60.1mpg, with a CO2 out÷put of 123g/km. An improvement in economy is reflected across the range, with some models being up to 24 per cent more efficient. Emissions have also been trimmed by as much as 21 per cent. Prices for the line-up have yet to be announced.
