This Sunday, the World Touring Car Championship is in action around the picturesque French town of Pau. James Thompson was the star last time out in Valencia, becoming only the second driver to win twice on the same weekend in WTCC history. The series is being lead by BMW duo Andy Priaulx and Jörg Müller.

They should put the brakes on the 400 crossover accidents a year in the UK which account for 40 deaths.

The Highways Agency has given the go-ahead for the low concrete wall to be installed on the busiest motorways, because tests by the Transport Research Laboratory show it to be safer. It can stop vehicles weighing up to 13 tonnes from crossing into the path of oncoming traffic. Traditional Armco only works for cars up to 1.5 tonnes, but vehicle weights have increased over the years - even a basic Ford Focus weighs 1.8 tonnes.

The step is specifically designed to guide wheels along the face of the barrier, so the vehicle doesn"t bounce back into the path of following traffic.

The first walls are already in place on the M62, M1 and M18, and work started last week installing more on the M6 in Staffordshire. As they are low maintenance, the need to cone off lanes for wall repairs will be reduced.
