This is despite 70 per cent of motorists voted throwing litter out of windows as "the most annoying habit on the road" in a new report.
Sofas, TVs, baths and fridges are some of the bulkiest items abandoned, said researchers at vehicle breakdown company Autonational Rescue. And they discovered wrecked and burned-out cars dumped along main roads and in country laybys.
The firm"s survey also counted dropped chocolate wrappers, drink cans, fast food packaging and cigarette ends, which it claims cost an estimated ÷£332million a year to clean up.
"By their very nature, litterbugs in cars are hard to catch unless a note is made of their registration plates and evidence captured," said Autonational marketing manager Ronan Hart.
