Wipe-out! That"s what...

Wipe-out! That"s what could happen to the Mercedes A-Class and Vaneo mini-MPV. The company is recalling all cars built in the 12 months before April 2003, because the windscreen wipers could come off. "In the worst case scenario, cracks in the recess for the plastic covers of the wiper arms can cause them to become detached," said a Mercedes spokesman.

That"s the view of transport experts who say there"s a "recipe for disaster" looming should the Euro-style road signs be adopted, as suggested, in the next five years. The UK Metric Association (UKMA) is pushing for the abolition of imperial miles and yards on Britain"s 1.5 million road signs in a new report, claiming there would be many benefits in converting to metres and kilometres. The group has listed examples such as the easier calculation of fuel economy and uniformity with other EU nations as key reasons for undertaking the ÷£80m scheme.

Three out of five motorists don’t want speed limits reduced to 20mph in town and city centres.

Car supermarket Motorpoint, which carried out the research, said that figure represents a total of around 18 million drivers objecting to the urban limits, which would be dropped from their current rate of 30mph.

Portsmouth is the first local authority to introduce the blanket restrictions, with Norwich council set to follow suit shortly. But they could soon be compulsory across the UK, if proposals put forward by the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety get the Government go-ahead. The move is designed to reduce the annual UK road death toll of 3,100 people.
