Land Rover has teamed up with jeans manufacturer G-Star to produce a limited-edition Raw Defender. Designers at the fashion firm have given the 110 Station Wagon a brown leather roof and added punched holes to the bumper, radiator and front wing vents. Each model has its own unique serial number. Sales start this month in left-hand drive only, with prices from around í‚á£40,000.

Although there are elements of the current car in its styling, the next-generation model has bulging wheelarches front and rear, making it wider overall. As well as creating an aggressive appearance, this allows a wider track for improved stability. The roadster will keep its folding canvas roof to save weight, but the interior is set to be restyled to match the tougher exterior. The larger back end will also house a bigger engine than the current 1.8-litre petrol unit.

As a result, a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre petrol powerplant will also be developed - likely to be a high-revving, slightly detuned version of the same 300bhp-plus engine that will power Subaru"s WRC entry from 2009. Crucially, this model is set to retain the trademark 4WD layout. Also in the pipeline is a production variant of the hybrid turbocharged boxer drivetrain from the B5 concept. A Subaru first, it will be co-developed with Toyota and is set to arrive in 2009 in an all-new Legacy. A face÷lifted version of the current car has recently been launched.

Underneath the minimal disguise lie bold headlights, a wide grille and distinctive slanted C-pillars at the rear - all cues taken from the Multi-S. Together with a high roof and car-like profile, they should make the Carens stand out against its class rivals.

Based on the next-generation Magentis saloon, the Carens is more versatile than before. Both five and seven-seaters will be available - the latter featuring two occasional chairs which fold into the boot. And with a low floor thanks to compact rear suspension, ample space is promised, even for adults.

The Carens will use the Magentis" 2.0-litre petrol engine and the Hyundai Sonata"s 2.0 turbodiesel. Set to arrive next summer, it is likely to be unveiled at June"s London Motor Show. Expect prices ranging from í‚á£10,000-í‚á£12,000.
