Ford is building a gadget that understands human speech so that drivers can ask their sat-nav: "How do I get to Buckingham Palace?" and receive turn-by-turn directions en route. The device, being perfected at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US, will also allow a driver to tell the radio to tune in to a favourite station.

The XC60 is set to go on sale in the UK in October priced from ÷£24,500. Designers claim it’s the safest and most stylish vehicle Volvo has ever produced, so hopes are high for the new compact-SUV.
Buyers get a choice of 2.4-litre five-cylinder D5 diesels offering 163bhp or 185bhp, while the flagship T6 features a 281bhp 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged petrol V6. All have a six-speed auto as standard. A front-wheel-drive-only 163bhp D5 will appear in 2009, pro–mising low 170g/km CO2 emissions.
