Road Tests

We"ve already spotted...

We"ve already spotted heavily camouflaged prototypes undergoing testing, but these scoop shots reveal the finished car.

As predicted, the executive model will boast a broad engine line-up, including a V8 - a first for the UK range. Our pictures clearly show a V8 badge and AWD logo on the bootlid. That means the firm will employ all-wheel drive to help the car cope with the XC90-sourced unit"s 315bhp.

Radar-operated cruise control, driver alert braking and a D5 diesel will also feature. Instantly recognisable cues include the char- acteristic grille. Its prominent diagonal design is flanked by clear lamps and a raised bon- net section. A pronounced shoulder line is another signature feature, along with the current model"s distinctive rear lights.

The family resemblance continues inside the car, where the centre console adopts the groundbreaking floating design first seen on the S40. High-quality materials and a stylish cabin will give rivals further reason to worry, while engineers have also paid close attention to the dynamics. The new S80 is expected to offer vastly improved handling without sacrificing refinement and comfort.

Prices are expected to start at í‚á£24,000, and the car will make its first official appearance at March"s Geneva Motor Show. Volvo is set to launch five models in the next 18 months: the S80, C70 Cabrio, VW Golf-rivalling C30, a V70 replacement and the Land Rover Freelander-sized XC50 SUV.
