With 168bhp, the 1.4-litre unit has more power than the existing naturally aspirated 2.0-litre FSI, yet provides better economy. Then in the spring, a low-output version of the TSI with 138bhp will debut in the Touran compact MPV. Tuned for low-down torque, it will be mated to a six-speed gearbox for improved cruising.
A spokesman for VW claimed that the new "super-turbo" technology can be applied to any petrol unit. "Most of the development will be on cars with small engines," he said. "It is certainly possible that 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre powerplants will become available with superchargers and turbos."
Meanwhile, a more potent 168bhp version of the firm"s 2.0-litre TDI diesel will be added to the Golf, Jetta and Passat ranges from next year.
