Next month"s Paris Motor Show will see the debut of the three-door Colt, the CZ3, which will form the basis of all sporty versions. It will be joined on the stage by Europe"s hottest variant, the 1.5-litre turbo CZT. With 150bhp, this newcomer is no slouch... but it won"t be able to keep pace with the car pictured here: Japan"s new Colt Evo.

X MARKS the spot when it comes to the future of Saab. The firm is getting serious about the development of its new SUV – as this picture of the latest prototype proves.

The Land Rover Freelander rival – which made its debut as the Bio-Power concept at January’s Detroit Motor Show – was spotted undergoing testing in the US.

It’s codenamed GMT168 within Saab, but will be badged the 9-4X when it arrives here in time for the 2010 model year. Under the skin is the same platform as found on another General Motors small 4x4: the Cadillac BRX. It will be built in at Mexico’s Ramos Arizpe factory.

Unlike the huge 9-7X – which was based on a Chevrolet and sold only in the US – the smaller, more efficient 9-4X will be available in markets around the world. The styling is expected to be very close to that of the Detroit concept.

Buyers will be able to pick from a wide range of petrol engines, as well as a new 250bhp diesel. And all models will be equipped with Saab’s XWD all-wheel-drive system.

Prices for the newcomer have yet to be discussed, although one source told us the car is a ‘premium’ offering. So, base models are set to cost more than the latest 9-3 saloon – which means the range could start from ÷£24,000.
