It"s got the class-leading Renault Clio and new Vauxhall Corsa in its sights - as well as the sales success of its predecessor. But let"s be clear. Meeting expectations in 2007 will require something very special. It sounds like a recipe for disaster – driverless vehicles racing round an urban environment with other traffic on the road. And normally it would be if it wasn’t for the fact the unmanned cars had been developed by some of the world’s leading scientists and fitted with state-of-the art technology to prevent them crashing into anything.

It turns out that new chief Carlos Ghosn was less than pleased when he viewed the rather bland pre-production Twingo II - which this week"s mag has sensationally scooped thanks to colleagues in France. And with none of the flair of the Zoé concept-influenced car we revealed in issue 885, an unhappy Ghosn has ordered a redesign before the model makes an appearance in showrooms in 2007.

Iò€™ve driven my fair...

Iò€™ve driven my fair share of Rolls-Royces and Bentleys. And Iò€™ve put my own money into high-end luxury cars, including an almost regal Mercedes S-Class which somehow used to glide itself, rather than allow me to drive it, down the street. But last week, I did the best part of a thousand miles in one of the most comfortable cars Iò€™ve ever piloted.

It was one of the prettiest...

It was one of the prettiest cars on the road but that hasnò€™t stopped MerÒcedes updating its SLK. And these official pictures show what the new model looks like. With a host of cosmetic changes inside and out, extra kit and a more powerful V6, the revised two-seater is taking the fight to the Porsche BoxÒster and Audi TT Roadster.

I"ve been predicting...

I"ve been predicting it, and – surprise, surprise – my prophecy has been realised. It’s now official: the great pretender touted as the alternative to the car has finally priced itself out of the market. For money and other reasons, we the public have decided that nine times out of 10, we prefer car cabins to rail carriages. And that’s official, too. Rail watchdog Anthony Smith has been reported in recent days as saying that rail travel “is for the rich”. He’s so incensed that he claims consumer protection on rail fares is “weak” and passengers are often left “with no choice”.

I wasn"t surprised to...

I wasn"t surprised to see Jaguar"s ill-fated XJ220 listed in a new book called Naff Motors. Perhaps it"s my age, but I"ve really fallen out of love with high-performance supercars. We"re suffering a bit of a glut of the things at present. Apart from the endless derivatives of the Pagani Zonda, Koenigsegg and Mercedes McLaren SLR, we"re also supposed to drop our jaws at Lexus"s supersaloon and Honda"s NSX replacement soon, while Alfa has recently announced it will make the 8C. At the Paris Motor Show this month, there will be another totally unrealistic Peugeot supercar concept that will never be made, as well as Audi"s de-tuned and rebodied Lamborghini Gallardo, the R8. Sorry, but the only jaw dropping I"ll be doing is a great big yawn.

Jaguar, Rolls-Royce...

Jaguar, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Lexus and Cadillac have all mastered the art. But Renault couldn"t with its awkward Vel Satis. And neither can Peugeot with the 607, which feels more like a giant, if humble, repmobile.

Likely to adopt the Azure name after the Pininfarina-styled 1995 model, the opulent four-seater is set to cost around í‚á£135,000 when it goes on sale next summer. It will build on the huge sales success of the GT coup탩 - last year, an incredible 1,841 GTs found new homes, with the Flying Spur expected to push the firm"s total sales over the 6,000 mark.

Looking every inch the baby Astra with its distinctive C-pillar and tall roof-line, the supermini promises to rival Fiat"s Grande Punto in the style stakes. Most normal cars offer...

Most normal cars offer five seats. Anyone who needs more has been limited to vans with windows (MPVs), hearse-like wagons (estates) or boxy trucks (4x4s). But now, thanks to the Japanese, buyers wanting extra accommodation have another solution; sleek looking six or seven-seat cars. And their arrival is contributing to the slow death of the traditional family hatch which, due to its lack of flexibility, has had its day. These tired old driver-plus-four mobiles will limp on for many years, but wouldn"t you prefer up to 40 per cent more chairs in an equivalent-sized model for little extra cash?

New VW Group boss Martin...

New VW Group boss Martin Winter-korn, who took the helm last month, has put the Passat Coupé, Tiguan SUV and Scirocco on hold. And even the next-generation Golf could be delayed while styling revisions are carried out.

No longer do you need to haul the heavy chairs in and out. In the second-generation Galaxy, they simply fold into the floor.

No, Postman Pat hasn’t turned over to the dark side! This is the next generation Nissan Cube in disguise – as far as possible – and undergoing testing before its 2009 launch.

Not even a downpour could dampen Fabrizio Giovanardiò€™s charge for a second consecutive BTCC crown. The Vauxhall driver scored a victory and a podium place over the course of three races at Silverstone on Sunday.

Not long was the answer...

Not long was the answer. An environmental author, more interested in selling his published works than telling it like it is, was on BBC TV. He was talking climate change and using the old tactic of mentioning the car exhaust pipe over and above every other polluter. Never mind truck, van, bus, coach, train, ship and aeroplane emissions! Never mind the damage done to the atmosphere by everything from agricultural to industrial output, from electric lights to inefficient domestic boilers. The so-called experts rarely refer to the fact that some central heating systems, for example, cause more pollution than some cars.

Not only can we reveal...

Not only can we reveal these sensational pictures of the model that takes centre stage at this week"s Geneva Motor Show, but we"ve also got all the facts about what will make this one of the company"s biggest thrillers ever.

Now, during the first...

Now, during the first half of 2006, his corporation has had to choose between axing nearly 1,000 British Vauxhall workers or a similar number of German Opel employees... and it"s the Brits rather than the Germans who"ve been dumped. How come these Ellesmere Port jobs are the ones to be sacrificed? Especially after Lutz told me that the UK has the edge over Germany as a manufacturing country.

Now firmly established...

Now firmly established as the world’s most popular historic race meeting, the spectacular annual Goodwood Revival not only recreates many of the sport’s most golden eras, but also offers exceptional wheel-to-wheel racing around a nostalgic circuit, virtually untouched by the modern world.

Number one - the diesel...

Number one - the diesel engine is dead. Thanks to high fuel costs, tough-to-meet emissions targets and growing competition for scarce fossil fuel resources, the engine once championed for its efficiency and cost-effectiveness is finished. Number two: you are what you eat. And in the case of the oil-burning powerplant, which chomps through a by-product of long-since-extinct dinosaurs… Well, you get the drift.

Only months after launching the new Outlander 4x4, Mitsubishi has officially revealed this: its baby Shogun.

Our double scoop kicks off with the Convertible. We"ve been tracking the car throughout its development, revealing an undisguised prototype in issue 726. But only now do we see the showroom-ready version, ahead of its launch at next month"s Geneva Motor Show.

Our spies captured this...

Our spies captured this red-hot evolution of the new DB9 which will hit our roads later this year.

Our spy photographers...

Our spy photographers spotted the brand new oil-burning variant being put through its paces in Germany, and it"s the turned-down exhaust at the rear which reveals that this BMW drinks from the black pump. Meanwhile, the sporty bodykit gives away the fact that this is no ordinary 3.0d. The off-roader is powered by exactly the same twin-turbo diesel that debuted in the 535d at this year"s Geneva Motor Show.

Oval lights and the...

Oval lights and the pronounced ridge down the centre of the bonnet mark a departure from the sharp lines of Renault"s current styling philosophy. But they certainly add character and drama to the new Laguna"s nose. Another unique feature is the carefully sculpted front wings, which sport a curved line sitting above the rest of the newcomer"s waistline.

Smaller, lighter and promising a bigger punch per pound than any rival, this is the Renaultsport version of the new Clio, which is set to blow the performance car market apart next year.

So another blistering...

So another blistering summer is quickly fading into autumn. And like the dead leaves that will be falling from the trees, I expect a flutter of money to cascade into UK showrooms. This year, the British car industry has pulled out all the stops and made the country and me very proud. I know we have our familiar scare stories, such as Jaguar going to the wall and Ford having a tough time. But with enough Bulldog Spirit, there"s always hope on the horizon - Jag is still British, there"s interest in the sleeping cat from UK-owned JCB and Ford is looking to turn its fortunes around. What"s got my chest really puffed out, however, is the raft of new metal currently leaving our factory gates that has a truly global market.

Some of the finer details...

Some of the finer details have been covered up, but the mag"s pictures show the newcomer almost completely undisguised. And don"t be fooled by the VW alloy wheels and the wacky badging - they are simply part of the attempt to hide the car"s true identity.

Sources have admitted...

Sources have admitted the car will be a "crossover" SUV, rather than a hardcore mud-plugger. In keeping with Audi"s image, it will be a luxury 4x4 aimed at the forthcoming Range Rover Sport and BMW"s X5. Spied this week at a...

Spied this week at a dealer launch in France, Renault"s next-generation Clio is out to give the number one-selling Corsa a tough fight - and it"s laying its hopes on a bold new face. With huge headlights and a smaller grille, the new three-door Clio is a stronger design than the current car. That visual strength is continued at the rear, with a chunky C-pillar and elliptical tail-lights. The whole effect is much sportier than the five-door, which will look more like a baby Scenic.

Still popular with buyers...

Still popular with buyers on a budget looking for unburstable reliability, the Micra was originally available with two engines, until a modern 1.4-litre unit was added in 2000. While the 1.3-litre model offers reasonable pace, it"s the 1.0-litre that"s responsible for the dismal Driver Power rating.

Stone me! The gritters...

Stone me! The gritters are out - and this time it’s because the weather is too hot. Sweltering temperatures have increased the risk of melting tarmac. Now, hot-under-the-collar bosses at County Durham and Cumbria councils have ordered workers to spray surfaces with crushed rock dust, instead of the usual ice-busting salt. It should keep the bitumen in place on the road and off tyres.

Stop staring at me...

Stop staring at me... the words on the side of this special MINI could not be clearer. But how can we resist? It"s the world premiere of the all-new Clubman! Auto Express was there to grab the first pictures of the eagerly awaited newcomer, which goes on sale here before the end of the year.
